When gym climbing helps, and when it does not

All three transfer to scrambling and technical alpine climbing. If your peak is technical, gym time is one of the highest-leverage indoor additions available.

A climber who spends winter in the gym without also building the aerobic engine arrives at the objective with impressive contact strength and no capacity to use it for twelve hours.
If you do not need rock climbing, what to learn instead

- Roped glacier travel + crevasse rescue basics. The non-negotiable for any glaciated peak. A weekend course with a certified guide (IFMGA/UIAGM in Europe, AMGA in the US) covers the fundamentals.
- Ice axe self-arrest. The move that saves a life when a slip on snow starts to accelerate. Learn it, drill it, on real snow.
- Crampon technique on hard snow and low-angle ice. Front-pointing, French technique, transitions. More useful than any indoor grade to a non-technical alpine climber.
- Weather and route judgement. The skill that decides whether a summit day happens, not just whether it succeeds. Time on the mountain builds this; gym time does not.
- Navigation in poor visibility. Map, compass, GPS discipline. Underrated until the whiteout arrives.
The realistic timeline to become "climbing-ready" if you need it
If your objective is technical and you are starting from zero rock climbing experience: 6 to 12 months of consistent gym and outdoor practice, plus a formal course covering rope systems and anchors, gets most amateur climbers to a point where they can follow (second) a moderate multi-pitch route in the mountains. To lead moderate alpine rock or mixed pitches independently, plan for 2 to 3 years.
This is the timeline that surprises many amateur mountaineers considering a technical objective: the physical fitness for the peak is often quicker to build than the climbing skill it demands.
