Planning

Peak Progression Planner

Map your peak ladder. Pick your experience, region, and goal peak. Output: a 2 to 4 peak progression with typical training time for each step and links to each peak training plan.

Vertical conversion

StairMaster Calculator

Convert StairMaster floors and steps to vertical gain in metres and feet. Useful for translating treadmill or stair-machine sessions into the unit mountain training actually cares about.

Common questions

Are the Train to Mountain tools free?

Yes. Every tool on this page is free to use, no account or signup required. The tools are built as a service to the mountaineering community and are funded by the Train to Mountain training app, which is a separate product.

What does the Summit Readiness Calculator measure?

The Summit Readiness Calculator estimates your cardiovascular readiness for a target peak using the Banister fitness-fatigue model (Banister et al., 1975). It takes your recent training load, weeks remaining to summit, and target altitude, and outputs a single readiness score against your specific objective.

What does the Peak Progression Planner do?

The Peak Progression Planner takes your current experience level, region preference, and goal peak. It outputs a 2 to 4 peak ladder showing the canonical intermediate objectives that build toward your goal, with the typical training time for each step. Recommendations are drawn from published guidance by alpine clubs and guide associations.

What are the StairMaster and Treadmill Incline calculators for?

Both calculators convert indoor training into vertical gain in metres and feet, which is the unit that matters for mountain training. The StairMaster Calculator converts floors and steps into vertical gain. The Treadmill Incline Calculator converts treadmill incline percent and distance into vertical gain. Useful for athletes who cannot access real vertical terrain regularly.
