The main types of mountaineering
Mountaineering is not one thing. The common categories mostly tell you what the logistics and the preparation look like, and most real objectives blend them.
- Expedition mountaineering. Multi-week, high-altitude objectives with base camps, staged camps, and heavy logistics. The defining challenges are altitude, duration, and load.
- Alpine mountaineering. Shorter multi-hour or multi-day routes climbed in the style of the European Alps: mixed rock, snow, and ice, self-supported, the athlete responsible for their own decisions on route. When this is done fast, light, and as a matter of ethic, it becomes alpinism.
- Glaciated peaks and walk-ups. Non-technical summits that still cross glaciers and reach real altitude. No hard climbing, but glacier skills and altitude tolerance are not optional.
What mountaineering demands of the body
Whatever the category, the physiology underneath is consistent. Preparing for a mountain means building four capacities, and they do not develop at the same rate:
- A large aerobic engine. Most of a mountain day is long, low-intensity effort. The base is built with high volumes of easy work in zone 2, the foundation of the polarised method (Seiler & Kjerland, 2006).
- Vertical capacity under load. Mountaineering is measured in metres of gain carrying a pack, not flat kilometres. The legs and the aerobic system have to absorb sustained uphill work.
