Why Middle Palisade punishes underprepared climbers
Middle Palisade is guarded by a glaciated approach and Class 3 climbing on famously loose rock. The moves are moderate, but the rock quality and route-finding make it feel serious - wander off-line and it gets harder and more dangerous fast.

Altitude and terrain reality check
Middle Palisade is reached from the Big Pine area via the South Fork and the Middle Palisade Glacier. The standard route climbs exposed Class 3 on loose rock, where route-finding is notoriously fiddly. At 14,012 ft you have around 60 percent of sea-level oxygen. Summer (July to September) gives dry rock; the glacier and approach hold snow earlier. This is a route where experience and composure matter as much as fitness.
The 12-16 week Middle Palisade preparation timeline
The block runs backwards from your climb date. Five phases, each with a distinct target.
- Weeks 1-4 · Aerobic base. Build the engine that keeps judgement intact when tired.
- Weeks 5-8 · Base plus strength. Strength and eccentric work; practise scrambling.
- Weeks 9-11 · Muscular endurance and scrambling. Long days with vertical, plus exposed and loose-rock practice.
- Weeks 12-13 · Peak simulation. A long alpine day with exposed ground and a real descent, 4-6 weeks out.
- Week 14 · Altitude exposure. Time high, ideally scrambling.
- Weeks 15-16 · Taper. Volume drops; skills stay sharp; arrive fresh.
A weekly distribution that works
The polarised principle applies: most volume easy, a little hard, one long day. A representative week, 12 weeks out from a Middle Palisade attempt:
- Mon · easy 60 min Z2
- Tue · threshold or VO2max intervals, 4 x 4 min Z4-Z5
- Wed · rest or 30 min mobility
- Thu · Z2 hike with weighted pack, 2-3 hours, 700-1000m (2,300-3,300 ft) of vertical
- Fri · easy 45 min Z2 + eccentric strength (step-downs, weighted lunges)
- Sat · long mountain day building toward 9 hours, mixed Z2 with vertical and progressive pack weight
- Sun · 2-3 h Z2 on tired legs (back-to-back loading, lighter pack)

Why is Middle Palisade considered serious for a Class 3 peak?
Because of the loose rock and tricky route-finding above the glacier. The moves are moderate, but poor rock and route complexity make it feel and climb harder than the grade suggests.
Do I need glacier skills?
In summer the rock is dry, but the approach and glacier can hold snow, so basic axe and crampon skills are wise, and earlier in the season they are required.
