Training for Mount Sill: What It Actually Demands

14,153 feet (4,316 m), and widely called the finest summit view in the Palisades. The standard route reaches the crest near Glacier Notch and finishes with exposed Class 3 scrambling to the top. Sill blends a glaciated approach with real scrambling at altitude - here is what it actually demands.

Why Mount Sill punishes underprepared climbers

Sill sits deep in the Palisades, reached by a long approach past the Palisade Glacier. Getting to the climbing is a big day in itself, on rough, high ground.

The summit block is exposed Class 3 - moderate moves, but airy and committing at over 14,000 ft, where altitude blunts both power and focus. The descent reverses that exposed ground on tired legs.

Fitness, composure, and comfort on glaciated terrain carry the day. All three are trainable.

Sill is reached from the Big Pine trailheads via the North Fork and the Palisade Glacier basin. The approach is high and glaciated, and the standard finish is exposed Class 3 near Glacier Notch. In summer the rock is dry; earlier the approach holds snow and needs an axe and crampons. At 14,153 ft you have around 60 percent of sea-level oxygen while scrambling exposed ground - fitness and composure both matter.

A weekly distribution that works

The polarised principle applies: most volume easy, a little hard, one long day. A representative week, 12 weeks out from a Mount Sill attempt:

How hard is Mount Sill?

The standard route is exposed Class 3 with a glaciated approach. The moves are moderate but airy at altitude; the Swiss Arete variation is a 5.6 rock route.

Do I need glacier skills for Mount Sill?

In summer the rock is dry, but the approach can hold snow, so basic axe and crampon skills are wise. Earlier in the season it is more of a mountaineering climb.

How fit do I need to be?

Fit enough for a long approach past the Palisade Glacier plus exposed scrambling at 14,000 ft, then a committing descent on tired legs.
