Why Mount Sill punishes underprepared climbers
Sill sits deep in the Palisades, reached by a long approach past the Palisade Glacier. Getting to the climbing is a big day in itself, on rough, high ground.

Physical benchmarks to hit before Mount Sill
Sill loads five systems, blending endurance, altitude, and exposed scrambling. A real plan builds all three.
Altitude and terrain reality check
Sill is reached from the Big Pine trailheads via the North Fork and the Palisade Glacier basin. The approach is high and glaciated, and the standard finish is exposed Class 3 near Glacier Notch. In summer the rock is dry; earlier the approach holds snow and needs an axe and crampons. At 14,153 ft you have around 60 percent of sea-level oxygen while scrambling exposed ground - fitness and composure both matter.
The 12-16 week Mount Sill preparation timeline
The block runs backwards from your climb date. Five phases, each with a distinct target.
- Weeks 1-4 · Aerobic base. Build the engine the approach rides on.
- Weeks 5-8 · Base plus strength. Strength and eccentric work; practise scrambling.
- Weeks 9-11 · Muscular endurance and scrambling. Long days with vertical, plus exposed-scramble practice, up and down.
- Weeks 12-13 · Peak simulation. A long alpine day with a big approach and exposed ground, 4-6 weeks out.
- Week 14 · Altitude exposure. Time high or a lower Sierra peak.
- Weeks 15-16 · Taper. Volume drops; arrive fresh.
A weekly distribution that works
The polarised principle applies: most volume easy, a little hard, one long day. A representative week, 12 weeks out from a Mount Sill attempt:
- Mon · easy 60 min Z2
- Tue · threshold or VO2max intervals, 4 x 4 min Z4-Z5
- Wed · rest or 30 min mobility
- Thu · Z2 hike with weighted pack, 2-3 hours, 700-1000m (2,300-3,300 ft) of vertical
- Fri · easy 45 min Z2 + eccentric strength (step-downs, weighted lunges)
- Sat · long mountain day building toward 6 hours, mixed Z2 with vertical and progressive pack weight
- Sun · 2-3 h Z2 on tired legs (back-to-back loading, lighter pack)
