Thunderbolt is reached from the Big Pine trailheads past the Palisade Glacier. The standard climb is Class 4, and the true summit needs a technical move (around 5.9, or aid/lasso) on a detached monolith. At 14,003 ft you have around 60 percent of sea-level oxygen while climbing committing rock. Summer (July to September) gives dry rock; the approach and glacier hold snow earlier. This is a route for experienced climbers or guided parties.
