4,509 m (14,793 ft) - Mount Wilhelm is the highest point in Papua New Guinea and one of the great summits of Oceania. It is non-technical in the mountaineering sense - no glacier, no ropes in normal conditions - but it is a serious objective: a long, cold, pre-dawn summit push from a high base, a scrambly summit ridge, and genuine altitude on a remote equatorial mountain where the weather is fickle and the logistics are real. Why Mount Wilhelm is harder than it looks

On paper Wilhelm is a walk-up with some scrambling. In practice, three things make it a real objective. The summit day starts in the small hours - often around midnight or 1am - to reach the top for sunrise, so you are moving cold, in the dark, on little sleep. The final ridge involves rock scrambling with some exposure. And the altitude, at over 4,500 m, is high enough that fitness and a sensible approach matter.
